STAVE OFF HOLIDAY JELLY-BELLY.

Don’t let the fear of holiday weight gain weigh you down. Men gain more unwanted belly fat between Turkey Day and New Year’s Eve, but with a game plan, you won’t have to make weight loss your resolution for ’09.

Eat right: There are plenty of simple food swaps you can make at your family dinner table that taste delicious and pack half the fat and calories as other choices. Eat beef over ham, and go for roasted potatoes instead of mashed, which are usually packed full of butter or heavy cream. For dessert, pair chocolate fondue with fresh fruit and a glass of red wine. It feels like an indulgence, but the pairing packs many health benefits—dark chocolate can reduce diabetes risk and is good for the heart, and both wine and chocolate help reduce oxidative stress in the body, lowering cancer risk.

Work it off: Burn off those sugar cookies with explosive workouts that rev your metabolism and keep you burning belly fat outside the gym. Can’t find a medicine ball at grandma’s? You won’t need fancy equipment for these fat-blasting bodyweight exercises. And you’ll do more than just keep the jelly belly away: Keeping up with your fitness will reduce your risk of injury in your favorite winter sports—the perfect way to shake off the holiday stress.
